However, Congress sources say, that Sonia also realizes that delaying Rahul's impending elevation for want of "the best suitable scenario" may no longer be a viable option.

Asked if the time had come for a generational change in the Congress and for the old to make way for the young, the Rajasthan Congress chief in a PTI interview said, "It is not a question of making way; it is a question of working together".

The letter angered the Congress workers and party leaders alleged that the administration was trying to prevent Rahul Gandhi from visiting Amethi.

Insiders said that the st-ate lists will be completed by the first week of October and anytime after that the CEA is expected to announce the schedule for elections to the post of party president. Pilot is himself the son of the deceased former Union minister and Congress leader Rajesh Pilot.

How far that would go to deflect criticism of dynastic rule within the Congress is not known, but like all other Congressmen, Pilot "strongly feels" someone's "name should neither be an advantage nor disadvantage in politics".

Pilot also firmly denied the charge of dynasty politics being levelled against the Congress. "Belonging to a family that has been in politics should not be treated as a disqualification".

"Congress should resolve the issue by talking it out with officials in Amethi", he said.

Before Pilot, Congress veteran Veerappa Moily had indicated Rahul's elevation in November, at the plenary session of the party.

The "cut-off date" system did not work in politics, he added. "This scares the BJP", senior Congress leader Akhilesh Singh had said.

"The BJP's margdarshak mandal has become the biggest travesty of time".
