Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke wears the pin of Israel's National Traffic Police under his sheriff's badge in an NRA promotional video.

Clarke announced yesterday that he is leaving office next month to accept a position as an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

The department declined to immediately confirm the appointment. According to Clarke he will be working with the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Partnership and Engagement as a liaison with state, local and tribal law enforcement and governments. Public engagement is an innocuous-sounding position, but I don't really think it is.

In an op-ed he wrote for Fox News in July 2016 entitled "It's Time to Stand Up to Black Lives Matter", Clarke wrote that "white America needs to be courageous, they need to stand up against this latest attack on the Black community by the likes of Black Lives Matter - to be unafraid to face the condemnation of the powerful but morally reprehensible liberal elites and mainstream media pushing these lies".

Critics have faulted Clarke for his management of a Milwaukee County jail where a mentally ill man died in 2016 of dehydration. In a House Judiciary Committee hearing in 2015, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) asked Clarke, "You said that illegal drug use is the scourge of the black community and it is a problem and leads to a great deal of violent crime..."

Tom Evenson, spokesman for Walker, said his office had not yet received a formal resignation letter from Clarke. "Yes, we've sued him before".

Bolduan began, "He has been one of the President's biggest defenders on television and one of the most controversial figures in Donald Trump's circle of friends, especially during the campaign".

His big following among conservatives got him a spot at the podium of the Republican Party convention previous year, making him one of the few African-Americans speakers at the event. Sheriff David Clarke gained nationwide attention previous year amid a series of remarks and social media posts about several controversial political topics. "Sheriff David Clarke's unconscionable record makes him unfit to serve", tweeted Democratic U.S. Sen. During one of those clashes in 2013, Clarke insulted Abele saying he had "penis envy". "A GOP-controlled Trump state like Wisconsin should not be represented by a liberal lesbian extremist like Tammy Baldwin!" said the Sheriff Clarke for Senate website, run by a group of Clarke supporters. The department's duties range from counterterrorism to enforcing immigration laws.

"It's going to be a huge learning curve for me". "I got a lot of things to take care of over the next several weeks", he said.

Now, Governor Scott Walker is tasked with appointing a new Milwaukee County sheriff.
